Structure determines function.
Degeneration of connective tissue is effected with joint immobilization. Dr. Henri Gillett, a chiropractor, coined the term, “Immobilization degeneration” which referred to the degenerative changes in an articulation following immobilization. He concluded that motion within the vertebral column is essential to provide normal autonomic and neuromuscular tone. Immobilization or disuse causes bone demineralization and weakness in insertions of ligaments, muscles and that softening of the cartilage is the first sign of immobility which causes degeneration due to decrease compressive stiffness. He suggested that degenerative changes seem to be reversible with re-mobilizaton. Further more, Lack of motion within the vertebral column can result in dysafferentation when mechanoreceptors are unable to inhibit nociceptors. This effect from a vertebral subluxation can lead to dysponesis which is misdirected physical reactions to various stimuli. In short, if the spinal kinesiology is altered from a vertebral subluxation the progression of degeneration of the spinal column is directly increased.
